Nidhi Tewari, a 2014 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer from Varanasi, has been appointed as the Private Secretary (PS) to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This prestigious role follows her dedicated service in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), where she has been contributing since 2022 with expertise in foreign and security affairs.
The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) announced her appointment on March 29, following approval by the Appointment Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
A Distinguished Career in Diplomacy and Security
Hailing from Varanasi, Prime Minister Modi’s parliamentary constituency, Ms. Tewari secured the 96th rank in the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2013. Before joining the PMO, she served in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) within the Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division. Her extensive experience in foreign policy and security matters has been instrumental in her rise through the ranks.
Promoted to Deputy Secretary on January 6, 2023, after serving as Under Secretary, Ms. Tewari played a pivotal role in the PMO’s ‘Foreign and Security’ vertical, reporting directly to National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. Her responsibilities spanned critical areas such as External Affairs, Atomic Energy, and Security Affairs, along with state-level issues, including those related to Rajasthan.
Her contributions were particularly significant during India’s G20 presidency, where she was actively involved in key diplomatic engagements and decision-making processes. Her expertise in global diplomacy and security has solidified her reputation as a skilled and capable officer.
From Varanasi to the PMO
Ms. Tewari’s connection to Varanasi adds a unique dimension to her career. Hailing from Mehmurganj, Varanasi, she transitioned from her earlier role as Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Tax) in the city to joining the Indian Foreign Service. Her journey reflects remarkable growth and dedication to public service.
Her rigorous preparation for the UPSC Civil Services Examination paved the way for her distinguished career. With her consistent success and commitment to excellence, Ms. Tewari has now taken on the critical role of Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, marking another milestone in her illustrious career.
