Jerusalem: Expressing anguish over the killings of more than 60 Palestinians during protests in the Gaza Strip, Turkey’s foreign ministry asked Israel’s consul-general in Istanbul to leave the country “for sometime”.
South Africa and Turkey recalled their ambassadors to Israel in protest, and Turkey also withdrew its ambassador to the United States, while the White House defended Israel’s actions.
Earlier on Tuesday United Nations human rights officials said that Israel’s use of lethal force against Palestinian demonstrators was unjustified.
At least 60 Palestinians died on Monday, during protests over the Trump administration’s controversial relocation of the Embassy from Tel Aviv, a move that has been praised by Israelis but has enraged Palestinians, the reports said.
Most of the dead were killed by Israeli fire near the border.
The United States inaugurated its new embassy in Jerusalem on May 14, which Palestinians opposed. Jerusalem is the root cause for the dispute between Palestine and Israel.
