The Government of Tripura has initiated selection process for the appointment of new DGP as IPS officer Amitabh Ranjan is nearing his retirement.
The Tripura government has commenced the process of appointing a new Director General of Police (DGP) ahead of the upcoming retirement of the current DGP, Mr. Amitabh Ranjan, a 1994-batch IPS officer. Mr. Ranjan, who took charge on July 28, 2022, is scheduled to retire on May 31, 2025.
The development came to light during a Supreme Court hearing on Tuesday, where a bench of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar was reviewing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by an NGO concerning the appointment of DGPs.
The counsel representing the Tripura government submitted a sealed letter to the court, confirming that the selection process officially began on March 7, 2025.
The state government assured the bench that the ongoing process fully complies with the Supreme Court’s established guidelines and previous rulings regarding DGP appointments.
