Revenue secretary Sanjay Malhotra has been appointed as the next Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for three years by government of India. The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) issued the notification on December 9. Malhotra will take over from Shaktikanta Das on December 11.

Malhotra’s Roles in Revenue and GST
As Revenue Secretary, Malhotra boosted tax collections and managed the GST framework. He served as the ex-officio Secretary to the GST Council and handled states’ expectations on tax reforms. He also led reforms at REC as its Chairman and Managing Director.
Reactions to Malhotra’s Appointment
Former Statistician Pronab Sen called the appointment “a little surprising but not entirely unexpected.” Rajnish Kumar, ex-SBI Chairman, said Malhotra’s experience matches that of previous RBI Governors with Finance Ministry backgrounds.
Malhotra will now lead RBI’s monetary policies and oversee crucial fiscal decisions. His expertise in finance and public policy will shape India’s economic future.
