Sanjay A. Lathkar Appointed as IG (Security) at Department of Atomic Energy

IPS officer Sanjay A. Lathkar has been designated as IG (Security) at Department of Atomic Energy.

The position has been temporarily elevated from Pay Matrix Level 14 to Level 15 for two years, equivalent to the rank and salary of an Additional Director General (ADG).

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Sanjay A. Lathkar, a 1995-batch IPS officer (Jharkhand cadre), as Inspector General (Security) under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) issued an official order confirming his tenure until his retirement on September 30, 2028.

Background and Career

Hailing from Maharashtra, Mr. Lathkar was born on September 5, 1968. With nearly three decades of service in law enforcement and administration, he is a highly decorated officer. He holds an M.Tech in Environmental Science and Engineering from IIT Bombay, along with additional qualifications in Law, Management, Cybercrime, Human Rights, and Criminal Justice. He recently earned his Ph.D., demonstrating his commitment to continuous learning.

Throughout his career, he has held key positions, including:

Superintendent of Police (Latur)

Additional Commissioner of Police (Pune City)

DIG of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Maharashtra

DIG and IG with the CRPF, leading critical anti-Naxal and internal security operations in regions like Gadchiroli, Ranchi, Nagpur, and Mumbai.

Awards and Recognition

Mr. Lathkar’s exceptional service has earned him numerous accolades, including:

President’s Police Medal for Gallantry (2002)

Police Medal for Meritorious Service (2015)

President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (2022)

Internal Security Medal (twice)

Chief Minister of Jharkhand’s Gallantry Medal

Outstanding Service Medal from the Union Home Ministry

He has also received over 60 commendation letters, 11 DG/CRPF Commendation Discs, and honors such as the Mahatma Gandhi Award from the State Minority Commission.

Beyond policing, Mr. Lathkar has actively contributed to community development, focusing on education, sports, environmental conservation, and youth empowerment—particularly in rural and Naxal-affected areas. His leadership blends strict enforcement with compassionate governance.

New Role at the Department of Atomic Energy

As IG (Security), he will oversee the protection of India’s critical nuclear facilities, ensuring their safety and integrity. His extensive experience in strategic security operations will play a crucial role in safeguarding the nation’s atomic energy infrastructure.
