Islamabad: In a historic judgement on Friday, the Pakistan Supreme Court barred former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from holding any public office or contesting elections throughout his life.
According to media reports, the bench of five judges explained the provisions of the Constitution in its decision.
Justice Umar Ata Bandiyal read out in his verdict “the disqualification of any MP or a public servant under Article 62 (1) (f) in the future will be permanent. Such a person cannot contest elections or become a Member of Parliament”.
On July 28, 2017, Sharif was disqualified by the Supreme Court in the Panama Papers Case. After this, another bench of the Supreme Court had disqualified Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Tareen and other law makers under the same provision.
A case was filed against Nawaz Sharif in the Pakistan Supreme Court on the Panama Papers matter and was heard between 1 November 2016 and 23 February 2017.
