Seoul: North Korea on Saturday announced suspension of further nuclear tests and missile launches immediately and closed down a site which was used to carry out atomic tests.
“The nuclear test site has done its job,” Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader declared in a six-point statement carried by Korean Central News Agency that included a commitment to focus on rebuilding the country’s economy.
“We no longer need any nuclear test or test launches of intermediate and intercontinental range ballistic missiles, and because of this the northern nuclear test site has finished the mission,” Kim was quoted as saying.
US President immediately took to twitter to express his happiness over the development, “this is very good news for North Korea and the world-big progress! Look forward to our summit.” The summit is expected to be held in late May or early June this year.
The North Korean leader’s statement came hours after US President Donald Trump revealed in his tweet that then CIA Director Mike Pompeo, who is Trump’s pick as Secretary of State, had travelled secretly to Pyongyang to meet Kim.
On April 18, he tweeted that “Mike Pompeo met with Kim Jong-un in North Korea last week. Meeting went very smoothly and a good relationship was formed. Details of summit (between Trump and Kim) are being worked out now. Denuclearization will be a great thing for world, but also for North Korea.”
