Retired IAS Rebecca Vanessa Suchiang has been appointed as Meghalaya’s First Woman Chief Information Commissioner.
Ms. Rebecca Vanessa Suchiang, a retired IAS officer from the 1989 batch (Assam-Meghalaya cadre) and former Chief Secretary of Meghalaya, has been appointed as the state’s Chief Information Commissioner (CIC). The Meghalaya cabinet approved her appointment on Wednesday for a three-year term, making her the first woman to hold this prestigious position.
The role had been vacant since November 14, 2024, following the retirement of IPS officer H. Nongpluh. The state government had been actively seeking a suitable candidate for the crucial post, which is instrumental in promoting transparency and accountability in governance.
This is Ms. Suchiang’s second assignment post-retirement, having previously served as the Director General of the Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute. With her extensive experience in public administration and governance, her tenure as CIC is expected to strengthen Meghalaya’s Right to Information (RTI) framework and enhance public access to information.
