Bengaluru: Janata Dal (S) leader H D Kumarswamy on Wednesday was sworn in as the chief minister of Karnataka.
Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala administered the oath of office and secrecy to JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy as Chief Minister of the state.
Congress leader G Parameshwara took oath as deputy chief minister.
The ceremony took place on the steps of Karnataka’s iconic Legislative Assembly complex, the Vidhana Soudha.
Congress president Rahul Gandhi, his mother and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, N Chandrababu Naidu, and Pinarayi Vijayan, her counterparts in Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala respectively, were present during the oath-taking ceremony.
Tejashwi Yadav, the Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, BSP chief Mayawati and SP leader Akhilesh Yadav, who have struck an alliance in Uttar Pradesh, NCP leader Sharad Pawar, CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury, and socialist leader Sharad Yadav were also in attendance.
The show of strength by a galaxy of national leaders and regional satraps is being seen as a strong signal to the BJP about the possibility of formation of a broad-based front to take on the BJP-led NDA in the Lok Sabha polls next year.
As per the reports, of the 34 ministries in the new government, the Congress will get 22 berths and the JD(S) 12, including the all-important post of the chief minister.
Earlier on Saturday, BJP’s B S Yeddyurappa, who was sworn in as Karnataka chief minister, resigned minutes before the floor test in the state assembly.
