Is SEBI to welcome Tuhin Kanta Pandey as its new Chairman?

Revenue Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey is one of the three strongest contenders in the coming up selection meeting for the SEBI Chairmanship.

 Mr Tuhin Kanta Pandey, a distinguished IAS officer from the 1987 batch of the Odisha cadre, holds a Master’s degree in Economics from Panjab University, Chandigarh, and an MBA from the University of Birmingham, UK.

Throughout his career, Mr Pandey has held several important positions, including:

  • District Collector and District Magistrate of Sambalpur district.
  • Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
  • Special Secretary in the General Administration Department.
  • Transport Commissioner, Health Secretary, and Commissioner of Commercial Taxes in the Odisha government.
  • Additional Secretary and Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Finance since August 28, 2016.
  • Secretary of the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) from October 22, 2019, where he played a key role in major disinvestment initiatives, such as the sale of Air India and the public listing of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).

In September 2024, Mr Pandey was appointed as India’s Finance Secretary. In January 2025, he was also assigned the role of Revenue Secretary while continuing his duties as Finance Secretary. His vast experience in both state and central government roles has played a crucial role in shaping India’s financial and economic policies
