The Chhattisgarh government has officially terminated the departmental inquiry against IPS officer Rajnesh Singh, following a closure report submitted by the Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) and a formal application by Singh himself.
The inquiry pertained to two phone tapping cases registered in 2019, during the Congress-led state government’s tenure. Singh, currently posted as Superintendent of Police (SP), Bilaspur, was accused of unauthorized surveillance activities during the investigation of the Naan scam, which occurred under the previous Raman Singh administration.
The case also implicated retired IPS officer Mukesh Gupta, former Director General of EOW-ACB. Both officers faced serious allegations, including document tampering, and were suspended after FIRs were filed under non-bailable sections.
However, the EOW-ACB’s closure report concluded that no criminal offense had occurred, and recommended the cancellation of the FIRs—leading the court to take a favorable view of both officers’ positions.
In a related development, Mukesh Gupta, who remained under suspension for nearly three years, successfully challenged the disciplinary action in the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), resulting in his reinstatement before retiring in September 2022. Similarly, Rajnesh Singh also approached CAT, which ruled in his favor and ordered his reinstatement.
With the departmental inquiry now closed, the long-standing legal and administrative chapter in Singh’s career appears to have come to an end.
