New Delhi: Senior Advocate Indu Malhotra on Friday was sworn in as judge of the Supreme Court. She was administered oath of office by Chief Justice Dipak Misra.
Indu Malhotra is the first woman advocate to be elevated directly from the Bar to the Supreme Court. She added to the existing strength of 24 judges in the apex court.
Malhotra will be the seventh woman judge of the apex court. Justice M Fathima Beevi, Justice Sujata V Manohar, Justice Ruma Pal, Justice Gyan Sudha Misra, Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai and Justice R Banumathi have been the Supreme Court judges before her.
The centre approved the name of senior lawyer Indu Malhotra for the appointment of a judge in the Supreme Court on Wedensday.
The Collegium of the five Supreme Court judges of Supreme Court had recommended the appointment of Justice KM Joseph and Malhotra for elevation to the Supreme Court in January. However, the government returned the collegiums’s recommendation to elevate Justice KM Joseph.
