IPS Officer Sonia Narang has been relieved from her ED Role where Prashant Kumar is going to step in.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has announced the relieving of 2002-batch IPS officer Sonia Narang from her post as Special Director, with Prashant Kumar, currently overseeing the Southern Region, set to take over her responsibilities.
Narang, who was elevated to the Special Director rank in 2022, held charge of the central region and the ED’s Special Task Force (STF). During her tenure, she spearheaded several high-profile investigations, including cases involving Vivo, the Popular Front of India (PFI), IFFCO, Ambience Group, politician Sukhpal Khaira, and a significant money laundering case linked to Khan Market.
As part of her duties, Narang led crucial probes into financial networks associated with banned organizations like the PFI and Maoist groups. The ED, under the Ministry of Finance, is responsible for enforcing key financial crime legislations such as the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act.
Her transfer back to her parent cadre in Karnataka has triggered speculation, especially since no official reason has been disclosed for the move.
Sonia Narang held one of the top-tier positions in the ED, second only to the Director. Her departure comes at a time when the agency is engaged in several sensitive and ongoing investigations.
It is worth noting that Satyabrata Kumar, a 2004-batch IRS officer, was also appointed Special Director in 2022 and currently heads the agency’s western regional operations.
