An IRS officer creates history by getting her name and gender changed in the official records.
Concluding to a historic decision, the Finance Ministry has permitted the request of a senior IRS officer to change her name and gender in all official records. For the first time an incidence of this kind has happened in the Indian civil services.
A 35-year-old IRS officer M Anusuya making such a request asked for her name to be changed to M Anukathir Surya and her gender to male from female. She is the incumbent Joint Commissioner in the office of the Chief Commissioner (Authorised Representative) of the Customs Excise & Service, Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT), in Hyderabad.
Accepting the request of the IRS officer, the competent authority has allowed here to be recognised as a male officer with a different name. Henceforth, the officer will be recognised as ‘Mr M Anukathir Surya’ in all official records.”
