New Delhi: A Delhi court on Wednesday extended interim protection to Karti Chidambaram from arrest till July 10 in Aircel-Maxis and 2G scam cases.
Special CBI judge O P Saini granted relief to the son of senior Congress leader P Chidambaram in the two cases filed by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and ED (Enforcement Directorate).
“A related matter is pending before the Supreme Court and that will be taken up for hearing on July 2,” advocate Nitesh Rana, appearing for the ED, said while seeking adjournment in the matter.
Earlier on April 16 the court granted interim protection to Karti till May 2 following Karti’s anticipatory bail plea in the cases initiated by CBI and ED in 2011 and 2012.
The case is related to the approval granted by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) for the Aircel-Maxis case in 2006 when P Chidambaram was the finance minister. Karti Chidambaram allegedly managed to get clearance from FIPB in the deal.
Aircel is a telecom company owned by C Sivasankaran. Maxis is a Malaysian company owned by Ananda Krishnan. In 2006, Maxis acquired Aircel by buying 74% stake.
