New Delhi: Fearing about their misuse by anti-social elements for nefarious activity in the country, the Centre has asked states such as Jammu and Kashmir and others to confine illegal Rohingya settlers to pre-identified locations within their respective jurisdictions.
The state governments have also been asked to record Rohingys’ particulars, including biometric details, but not issue them Aadhar number or any other identity proof.
While not disclosing much about other moves of the Centre towards thousands of Rohingyas who have illegally entered India in phases since 2008, an official who keeps a tab on the issue, said that the Centre has sought has personal details of Rohingyas so that they could be shared with the Myanmar government for their likely repatriation.
The government wants to prevent wider diffusion of Rohingya in the country beyond their settlement areas, as it fears about possible presence of radical elements among them and their involvement in crime.
According to estimates put together by the intelligence agencies last year, there are around 40,000 Rohingya Muslims illegally settled across the country.
Of these, 7,096 are in J&K (Jammu), 3,059 in Hyderabad, 1,114 in Mewat (Haryana), 1,200 in western Uttar Pradesh, 1,061 in Delhi (Okhla) and 400 in Jaipur.
