In order to regulate appointment conditions of Chief Election Commissioner as well as Election Commissioners, a bill has been moved in the Rajya Sabha by the government.
Today, the GOI showed its intent to regulate the appointment, conditions of service along with term of office of the CEC and other Election Commissioners (ECs). A bill in this regards has been moved in the Rajya Sabha which also intends to regulate the procedure for the transaction of business by the EC.
Arjun Ram Meghwal, the Minister of Law and Justice, moved the CEC & other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Bill, 2023, in Rajya Sabha today for its consideration.
Among others there are 3 to 4 key issues in the bill including salary and regulation of appointments, as mentioned by the Minister during his address to the Upper House.
The new bill is to replace the Election Commission (Conditions of Service of Election Commissioners and Transaction of Business) Act, 1991. The bill was earlier introduced in the Upper Houaw on August 10, 2023.
