Today, the assembly poll verdict is out for Jammu & Kashmir and Jharkahnd which witnessed a record turnout in the multi-cornered contests to elect their assemblies.
The PDP is leading in 29 seats in Jammu and Kashmir, the BJP in 25. The ruling National Conference or NC had fallen way behind at 12, with the Congress at the number 3 spot with 15 seats.
The biggest gainer is the BJP, with a commanding performance in the Jammu region. The big loser is Omar Abdullah’s NC. To form government in J&K, a party or alliance needs 44 of the state’s 87 seats.
The Congress has indicated that it is open to partnering with any party in J&K to form government. “Except for the BJP,” said senior Congressman Ghulam Nabi Azad. In Jharkhand, the BJP was leading in 39 seats; it needs 41 for a majority in the 81-member Jharkhand assembly. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha of Chief Minister Heman Soren was ahead in 20 seats. The Congress is wiped out, leading in only seven.
