AIIB: Ajay Bhushan Pandey Posted as Vice President

Former NFRA Chairman and Retired IAS 0fficer will now be overseeing key investment portfolios.

Mr. Ajay Bhushan Pandey, former Chairman of the National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA) and a retired 1984-batch IAS officer from the Maharashtra cadre, has been appointed as Vice President (Investment Solutions) at the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). His appointment reflects his influential contributions to India’s financial, taxation, and digital governance reforms.

In his new role, Mr. Pandey will lead three pivotal departments at AIIB — the Sectors, Themes, and Finance Solutions Department, the Sustainability and Fiduciary Solutions Department, and the Portfolio Management Department. His expertise is expected to play a critical role in shaping the bank’s infrastructure investment strategies.

An alumnus of IIT Kanpur, Mr. Pandey holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota, USA. Over the course of his distinguished civil service career, he has held several prominent positions, including Finance Secretary, Revenue Secretary, Chairman of the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN), and CEO of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

As UIDAI Chief, he was instrumental in the nationwide implementation of Aadhaar, India’s biometric identity platform. As Finance Secretary, Mr. Pandey spearheaded major tax reforms such as faceless assessment and appeals, aimed at enhancing transparency and improving taxpayer services. His tenure was marked by efforts to simplify compliance and boost the ease of doing business.

In announcing the appointment, AIIB emphasized Mr. Pandey’s strong reformist background and noted that his leadership will be key in advancing the bank’s mission to promote sustainable and innovative infrastructure financing.

This new role marks another significant milestone in Mr. Pandey’s illustrious career, positioning him to contribute meaningfully to global infrastructure investment and development through the AIIB.
