AIADMK supremo and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was today headed for a clear victory as she secured an unassailable lead of over 62,000 votes over her CPI rival in the R K Nagar Assembly seat bypoll. At the end of seven rounds of counting, Jayalalithaa had secured 67,453 votes against CPI candidate C Mahendran’s 4,816. Social activist ‘Traffic’ Ramaswamy had polled 2226 votes.
The early trends put the party supporters in a celebratory mode with many of them thronging the AIADMK headquarters and Jayalalithaa’s Poes Garden residence here, raising slogans of ‘Puratchi Thalavi Vazhga (Hail revolutionary leader). Party supporters said today’s trends were a ‘precursor’ to the assembly polls scheduled next year.
