New Delhi: The Central Board of Direct Taxes denied the media reports which claimed that documents in connection to the investigation of fugitive businessman Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi were ablazed in the Mumbai office.
The department on Sunday said that the documents related to investigation were transferred to the assessment units before a fire broke out in the Income Tax Office.
The Income Tax department said in a tweet, “News reports appearing in some sections of media alleging that records/documents relating to investigation of Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi have been destroyed in the Scindia House fire in IT Office, Mumbai are completely false & misdirected (Sic).”
On Friday, a massive fire broke out at the Income Tax office in South Mumbai. The blaze started on the third floor of the office located in multi-storeyed Scindia House, reports said.
The building, a well-known landmark in South Mumbai, also houses the office of the Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT).
