New York: Indian-American Deepa Ambekar has been appointed as the interim judge in the civil court of New York City. Ambekar is the second Indian-American woman judge after Chennai-born Raja Rajeshwari.
The statement issued by the office of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said that 41-year-old Ambekar has been appointed in the civil court.
The New York City Mayor announced the appointment of interim judge Ambekar in Civil Court, along with the re-appointment of three family court judges.
Ambekar has worked with the New York City Council for three years as Senior Legislative Attorney and Public Safety Committee advocate. She has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and received her law degree from Router Law School.
In 2015, Rajeshwari was sworn-in as the judge of the criminal court, along with that she became the first India-origin woman to become a judge in the city.
