New Delhi: Ignoring RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav’s protest that he should not be discharged from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, the country’s top hospital on Monday released him, stating the former Bihar Chief Minister’s condition has improved significantly and that he is fit to travel back to Ranchi for his medical care.
The AIIMS referred him back to Ranchi Medical College for management of his chronic ailments.
Lalu wrote a letter to the AIIMS authorities expressing his unhappiness with the decision, categorically stating that he was not fit enough to return to Ranchi.
“I don’t want to be shifted back to the Ranchi hospital, as that hospital is not properly equipped to treat my ailments,” Lalu wrote in his letter.
The AIIMS said that the RJD chief’s health condition is stable.
But Lalu’s younger son and former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav termed the AIIMS’ decision to release Lalu from the hospital as one taken in “haste.” He also added: “Only AIIMS authorities can reveal the reason behind the sudden transfer.”
However, drama around Lalu’s release from the AIIMS began unfolding when Congress president Rahul Gandhi, met the ailing RJD chief at the institute.
The RJD chief, serving a jail term since December 23, 2017, was undergoing treatment for various ailments related to heart and kidney. He was admitted to the country’s premier medical institute on March 29.
On March 17, the RJD chief was admitted to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi over complaints of uneasiness while he was lodged at the Birsa Munda jail.
Lalu Prasad Yadav has been convicted in four fodder scam cases since 2013—the latest being the case related to forged withdrawal of millions of rupees from the Dumka treasury, in which a special CBI court sentenced him to 14 years in jail.
