New York: In a major development India has won election to UN’s Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), which is a prominent non-governmental organization within the world body. India received 46 votes followed by Pakistan (43), Bahrain (40) and China (39).
India has been top of the voting for non-governmental organization in the UN. India, Bahrain, China and Pakistan were chosen for the Asia Pacific State category while Brazil, Cuba, Mexico and Nicaragua were selected for the Latin America Caribbean State for the four-year term beginning on January 1, 2019.
Syed Akbaruddin, Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations said that the results once again show that many of the UN’s allied countries have widespread support from India.
11 other nations were chosen by the council for the same period of time. India is looking forward to advise the council on the development policies and programs related to population development, integrating population issues and development strategies for four years.
Council has chosen India for Commission for Social Development for a term of four years and also it has elected India for a three-year term on the Executive Board of UN-Women, which works for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, starting from January, 2019.
