On Monday, The Supreme Court of India has appointed Former CBI Special Director M L Sharma(IPS, RJ:72) to head the panel to probe ex- chief of CBI, Ranjt Sinha in the ‘Diarygate’ case, who during his tenure as the agency chief, was accused of scuttling the probe into the coal block allocation scam.M L Sharma on Monday gave his consent to the Supreme Court to probe into the allegations against CBI’s ex-chief Ranjit Sinha for meeting several accused in the illegal coal block allocation cases at his official residence and alleged attempts to scuttle the investigation.
However, the CVC had informed the court that the corruption watchdog does not have its own team to probe. NGO Common Cause, which is the petitioner in the coal block allocation scam, through its advocate Prashant Bhushan, has filed a plea for a thorough probe against Sinha and sought an SIT probe.
Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi said Sharma has sought time to select the officers to assist him in the inquiry. The Bench has posted the case for further hearing on August 10.
