Shopian: Five terrorists, including an assistant professor at the Kashmir University who had joined the terror group a few years ago, were gunned down on Sunday in an encounter with security forces. A top Hizbul Mujahideen commander who was once closed to terrorist Burhan Wani was also among those killed.
Police said that operation was launched against the terrorists upon getting a tip-off about their presence in Badigam village. “As soon as soldiers from the CRPF and the Army began the search operation in Badigam village, the holed-up terrorists fired, triggering the gun battle there,” a senior police official said, adding that a soldier and a policeman were also injured in the gun battle between terrorists and security forces.
Earlier on Saturday, three terrorists were killed and three CRPF officers injured in an encounter in Chhatabal area in Srinagar. Mobile internet services have been suspended across south Kashmir.
