Coimbatore: The police have arrested the 1998 Coimbatore serial bombings convict Mohammed Rafiq after a recorded telephonic conversation went viral on social media in which he is allegedly heard saying that he is planning to kill Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In the eight-minute long telephonic conversation, Rafiq is heard saying, “we have decided to kill Prime Minister Modi.” He is also heard saying, “we were the ones who planted bombs during L K Advani’s visit to Coimbatore in 1998.”
A resident of Kunniyamuthur, Rafiq completed his jail term in connection with the 1998 bomb blast case. He had been to almost all jails in Tamil Nadu.
He has been heard saying that he had been booked under the Goondas Act, Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act and the National Security Act. On Saturday, the police came to know about the audio. Soon after this, a special team was formed to conduct an enquiry.
In the meanwhile, the police have registered a case against Rafiq under sections 153(A) (promoting enmity among different groups on grounds of religion) and 560(i) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
